40th Annual MayfestivalDowntown Rutherfordton (NC) celebrates Mayfest on May 5th with a family friendly street festival. There will be food vendors, kid activities, local arts and crafts, music and dancing in the streets. The festival is from 9 am to 5 p.m. and is sponsored by the Town of Rutherfordton and Rutherford Town Revitalization.
The 1st Saturday in May festival is a Rutherfordton tradition. This 40th years offers the theme of “Celebrating our Cultural Heritage” as part of the 225th Anniversary of the Town of Rutherfordton’s founding in 1787. The events reflect our music, arts, crafts, and stories. Onstage for music is Citizen Mojo at 11 a.m. on the Courthouse stage. In the afternoon, Evergreen plays at 3 p.m. Other groups will also take the stage.Explore the exhibits, taste the funnel cakes or bbq, and shop the local merchants. The Rutherford Visual Arts Center will be displaying art ranging from stained glass to fused glass, fiber art to pottery, wood carving to painting. Various paint mediums will be demonstrated. As part of the 225th anniversary of Rutherfordton and its Bechtler Mint heritage, a gold panning area will be area beside the Woodrow Jones Building. Lloyd Nanney, owner of Thermal City Gold Mine, will be on hand with stories of the challenges of mining and the role of gold in our community. Lloyd is featured in the UNC-TV documentary “Gold Fever and The Bechtler Mint”that premieres locally on September 29. Additionally, storyteller and Rutherfordton’s own Dot Lane, a Blue Ridge National Heritage Area Traditional Artist, will be telling stories on the Carrier Houses' porch. In a display of our cultural heritage, the Rutherford Quilt Guild has a quilt show from 9 am until 3 pm in the family life center of the First Baptist Church of Rutherfordton. This large group of talented quilters share the communal and cooperative act of quilting.
